Staying Safe On Your Scooter
Scooters are an economic and environmentally-friendly way to get around, and their size makes them easy to maneuver and park. But that size also means they’re vulnerable to a number of road hazards people in cars and trucks don’t need to worry about. We here at West Virginia Motorsports - Princeton value your safety, so we’ve put together some safety tips for your next scooter ride. Understand the Safety Hazards
It can be easy to think that the smaller size and lower speeds make scooters safer than motorcycles, but they still have plenty of dangers.
For instance, the lower speeds mean you’ll be on residential or back roads more often, which can be dangerous since people who drive them think they’re safer, lowering their guard. Scooters are also still open-air, meaning you’re still being affected by weather and airborne debris.
The lower size means you’re even less visible than a motorcycle, so you’ll need to rely on bright colors and flashy designs. Scooters are often less stable than motorcycles, as well, given the smaller wheels, so bumps and holes in the road can have more of an effect.
Riding Defensively
This means driving extra cautiously and assuming the other drivers around you are being unsafe or inattentive. With the smaller size and engine, you’re at a bit of a disadvantage compared to most other motorists. Keeping your movements predictable, visible, and maneuvering farther away from other motorists will be invaluable. Stay vigilant for debris or changing road hazards.
Gear Up
Obviously, you’ll also need similar safety gear to what you’d wear on a motorcycle. That means durable, full-coverage clothing. This starts with a good helmet that fits your head snugly and comfortably. You’ll also need a riding jacket and long pants, made either from leather or heavy denim, and riding boots that go above your ankles. You can also add reflective strips and panels to your scooter and clothing to help improve visibility further.
